Tummy Trouble

As of this week I stated having stomach problems again. I think I get my diet figured out and them BHAM! I am sick again. I am finding out that milk and cheese are not my friends. Even if it is baked in. You would think that milk cooked in bread would not be bad. But that is not true. It makes me just as sick as if I sat and drank a good old glass of milk.

I am going to go back to documenting what I eat in this blog. If I am sick or not.

I am considering trying this FODMAP's elimination diet. It is a 10 day diet which helps me see what food are making me so sick.I found this blog, www.hungryhungryhippie.com/lets-talk-fodmaps/ that talks a lot about the diet.I am at such a loss since my GI doctor has no answers for me.

Today to eat I had:

Breakfast: 1 Whole Grain Waffle (that had dairy, my bad), Syrup (have to by the 360 maple next time), Almond Milk.

Snack: 4 Red Grapes, Orange

Lunch: Calamari Salad, Bakery Roll, Nathans French Fries and a Coffee

Snack: 1/2 Larabar

Dinner: 2 Bean Tacos

Snack: Bakery Roll with Artichoke Hearts

Late Snack: Dried Cherries, 8 Almonds

I find that I am really not very hungry anymore. I used to eat and eat. But now I get so sick I don't want to eat anything.I did cook a hamburger for my son, it smelled good but I know one bite and I am in pain for 3 hours.

If you are interested in my milk choice it is Almond Breeze Original.
Almond Breeze Original Refrigerated and Shelf Stable.

My new favorite snack food:
Coconut Cream Pie
The reason I like them is they have very few ingredients. Not a lot of junk mixed in. They are soft and chewy, too! I don't like that they are 200 calories. That is like a whole meal to me, so I will be only eating them as a treat.

So What's Wrong With Me

Our creative life lil green monster captures how I feel!

I have been sick again. I have lost another 5 lbs. I don't really understand about my GI system. One day I am better. The next I am so sick I can't get out of bed. I live on the toilet. I wish someone could answer me. My doctor says my test are negative. Could it be IBS? Is it just food allergies? What is the difference? I am looking into this FODMAP. If anyone wants they can respond to me with comments below.

The Nasoya story...two guys and a barn!

Hello. I am posting this because I was given some coupons from the company and I will be trying their products. I wanted you to know a bit about the company. I will be posting the outcome in my blog.

The Nasoya story...two guys and a barn!

Nasoya was founded in April of 1978 when two gentlemen began producing tofu in a converted barn in Leominster, Massachusetts. By 1984, Nasoya had grown to produce over 25,000 pounds of tofu per week and by 1987, had grown to produce over 60,000 pounds of tofu per week.
During this period, Nasoya moved to a 28,000 square foot production facility in Leominster and installed state of the art Japanese tofu production equipment. With the new expansion and equipment upgrade, coupled with the increasing demand for health conscious food products in the market, propelled Nasoya to grow throughout the United States.
By 1990, Nasoya was acquired by Vitasoy USA, Inc. allowing Nasoya to expand its product lines by offering Asian style noodles and wraps as well as Nayonaise, the first ever soy-based sandwich spread in the country.
Always striving to meet the changing needs of consumers, Nasoya is committed to providing delicious, premium vegetarian foods to consumers for over 30 years. Its innovations include all-natural Super Hummus, organic and all-natural tofu, including tofuplus®, fresh, all-natural Asian style noodles and wraps, and Nayonaise vegan sandwich spread. Veggie Lifestyle

The Vegetarian Lifestyle

Now if you want to be thiner, Vegetarian or Vegan are a sure way to go. How do I know this well, I have lost 30 pounds in 4 months by converting to Vegetarian.

My choice was not optional. I was getting sick from animal products. Not from the animal but from Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) and antibiotics in commercial farm animals. Why do they give this junk to animals? So the cows grow faster and can be slaughtered sooner. Basically to make money faster. Anyway these products were effecting my digestion and I was getting sick.
I found this interesting :

"Because of health concerns for both people and animals, Japan, Canada, Australia and the European Union have all banned the use of rBGH, but the hormone is still given to cows in the US. The EU has also banned the import of meat from animals treated with hormones, so the EU imports no beef from the US.
Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) causes cows to produce more milk, but its safety for both people and cows is questionable. Additionally, this synthetic hormone increases the incidence of mastitis, an infection of the udder, which causes the secretion of blood and pus into the milk. "
By , About.com

Ms. Lin is not the only article I have seen about growth hormones and antibiotics in US farm animals. I saw one on television where cow were given antibiotics and it effected there bodies so bad they could hardly walk.

It can have really bad effects on animals so imagine what it is doing to our bodies. We eat that poisons meat. But I need to stop my rant.

What to do to become a healthy Vegetarian.

There are different types of Vegetarians. adapted from Nasoya web page-

Lacto-ovo Vegetarian- These people eat plant based diets with eggs & dairy

Lacto-ovo pescatrian- These people eat plant based foods with eggs, dairy & Fish (This is me without the milk and dairy)

Semi-Vegetarian- These people are Vegetarian most of the time, but add meat on occasion.

Vegan- This is more of a lifestyle by itself. Vegans are plant based all the time!! No meat, No dairy, No fish No honey. They want to save the planet and keep the environment as healthy as possible. They are animal rights activists. They think bee keepers are cruel to insects. Vegans are hard core!!

Fruitarian- these people only eat fruit, nuts and self reproducing plants that are not destroyed by being eaten: IE apples, pears

Raw Foods- These people only eat plant based raw foods. In fact if you use a blender it will over cook a raw foods diet.

Vegetarian Food Guide Pyramid

Now you may think that you are not getting enough nutriments but as long as your eating fruit, nuts, beans, vegetables, whole grains and tofu you should be good to go. You can also take a vitamin daily. Be sure to read the label. No animal products or by products.

One way to become or try to be a vegetarian is to eat vegetarian 1 day a week say Wednesdays is Veggie day. Try that for a month then add Mon-Wed-Fri are veggie days and so on.

Another way is to try a Mediterranean diet. I love this diet without the meat and dairy. The foods are delicious.

The Mayo Clinic Mediterranean diet emphasizes:
  • Getting plenty of exercise
  • Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts
  • Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil
  • Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods
  • Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month
  • Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week
  • Drinking red wine in moderation (optional)
Mediterranean Diet Pyramid
Once you have started this write a food diary.

Food Diary
Write everything you put in your mouth down. Don't cheat, no one will see it but you. Do it for 3 months. What happens is you become so conscious of what you eat. You will eat less. It is also good to write how you are feeling everyday after you eat. Tired, bloated, gas, diarrhea, headache and so on.. Write down your weekly weight. Write down if you do exercise.

If you need help with what to cook just google some recipes or look at my blog for ideas.

So while you are on this journey your friends and family might say your nuts! But don't listen. Just do what is best for your body. Once you start dropping weight ,you will start feeling mentally better about yourself and your body. The friends and family will be amazed that you did it all with food!

And you should always tell your doctor before changing your diet. Your food impacts your digestion and medication is digested so be sure check to see if it is alright to start a lifestyle change. Chances are the doctor will say yes but they may need to adjust the diet and medication for you.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

1
Breakfast, Beverages
Silken Tofu, Lite Silken Tofu
Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy Free
Nasoya Fan

1 serving of Nasoya Silken Soft Tofu- 1/3rd container
1/2 cup Raspberries- Frozen raspberries
1/4 cup Blueberries
1 small Banana-
2 Tbs Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter- Regular all natural peanut butter or Sunbutter
1/4 cup Soy Milk- Almond milk
1/2 cup Ice and Water mix-I use Ice only
Optional 1 sugar packet
Blend Until Smooth. The redder the better otherwise if it's still a bluish color it will taste more like blueberries.

This makes 1 and 1/2 shake. I drink it all. It is my meal. I think its around 300 calories. The whole fat peanut butter is 200 calories. This smoothie will not keep, you have to drink it in one sitting.

I make this a lot. I think my changes make it taste creamier. I don't count fat calories. So I use regular or full flavors opposed to low fat products.

The reason I don't worry about fat is because I eat so little. I have done a lot of reading about nutrition and found that some fat is needed in your body. Your body needs a little bit of all nutrients. But your body does not care if it is animal or plant based. So I choose plant based!

Hope this is yummy for your tummy,

Nasoya- yummy for your tummy

I have to say I love love love this companies products
http://www.nasoya.com/

I have always been a tofu fan even before I became sick. But this company has more than just tofu. It has this awesome Super Hummus. The reason why it is good is that it has extra protein. When you take meat out of your diet you need to add protein. This Hummus does that.

The company also has tofuplus:

 Tofu Plus Black Soybean
This product helps you to get the nutrition you need when you don't eat meat, like vitamin E, calcium and protein. It is easy to cook with and Nasoya has online recipes to help you decide what to eat.

Another product is
Chinese Noodles

These are easy to cook and yummy to eat!!

Now I know I might sound like a commercial but I did not know what to eat after I got sick. So these items have helped me to eat and stay healthy. I eat them every week, if not everyday. I just hope the supermarket keeps them in stock!

Chorizo- made with soy

Everyday I find myself trying new foods that do not have animal products. Today I tried this product:
It is made in Califorina, by El Burrito Mexican Food Products
This product is 90 cal per serving and 35 fat cal. I personally do not count calories because I keep losing so much weight that it does not matter what I eat (within reason).
I made it with potatoes, red and green peppers and onions. I cooked the potatoes then drained the water and added everything together. Saute it for 5 min with 1/4 cup oil and 1 tea salt.
It was good.

Next time, I think I will eat it in a taco shell with jalapenos and salsa. This product will be good as a meat substitute in chili. I have just the recipie to try this in. I'll let you know when I make it.

Every product I eat has no animal products and no dairy. I also like to watch out for oils/ fats too! Oil makes me have "D". so when I post you can be sure its low in fat too!

I did not get paid to write about this product.

Happy Eating
I had to start this blog so I can talk about how sick food has made me and to warn others with food allergies.

At the beginning of the summer, I started to get sick. nausea, dizzy, vomiting, side pain and the worst diarrhea ever. I thought I just had a stomach bug so I took some medication. But it did not go away. I went to my doctor and we started the tests. Blood work. Stool samples. Ultra sound. Cat scan. all came back negative. I had now lost 25 pounds. I was writing a food journal for 4 months and soon learned what was making me sick. Animal products! I have been eating animal all my life and now it was making me so sick I could not even get out of bed.

I went to see a gastrologist and he was going to do a colonoscopy but we finally go my stomach to settle with Lomotil, Zofran and some diet changes. Lomotil is a diarrhea medication, Zofran is for nausea and for my diet no meat + no dairy= no stomach problems. The gastrologist believes that at 44, I am now lactose/ dairy intolerant and that I have adverse reactions to the steroids and antibiotics in commercial farm animals. I had heard of animal medications in meat but now it was literally making me sick.

Now, I am on a mission to eat better and to feed my family better so we are not sick, overweight and tired. My daughter has lactose intolerance and does not really like eating meat and my two sons are meat lovers. So how do I make us all healthy and animal free. This blog will show how I will do this. I will share personal stories, recipes and any information I learn along this journey. I am not a food critic, a medical person and I have no formal education in nutrition or diet. I am just a mother of 3 with a degree in social work, whom is tired of being sick. I hope this blog helps others with dietary problems.
